Care that reaches children where they already are.
South Carolina has roughly one school-based mental health counselor for every 567 students, and more than three quarters of young people here with depression receive no treatment at all. Charleston Hope works across the tri-county to change that, partnering with Title I elementary schools to bring therapy and enrichment programming inside the building, during the school day, at no cost to families.
We believe in a world where every child has access to the mental and behavioral health support they need to thrive.
OUR THREE-TIERED APPROACH
Charleston Hope's model aligns with the school district's own Multi-Tiered System of Supports, so we add to what a school already does rather than working around it. Every student receives the level of care their needs call for.
Tier 1 · Universal
Trauma-informed training for staff across the whole school, and coordination with the school's support team so students and teachers get the right help at the right time.
Tier 2 · Targeted
Early intervention for students showing signs of emotional or behavioral difficulty. Individual and small-group support, with assessment before and after to track growth.
Tier 3 · Intensive
Comprehensive clinical therapy for students carrying more complex or persistent needs. One-on-one sessions during the school day, scheduled with the school and the family, reviewed monthly by the full care team.
THRIVE, SCHOOL-BASED THERAPY
Our school-based therapy program. A licensed clinician, a care coordinator, and supervised graduate clinicians work on site at each partner school, serving children from age three through fifth grade.
Every student is fully assessed before care begins and again at the end, so growth is measured rather than assumed. Care runs a minimum of twelve sessions across the school year.
STEP-IN
Our after-school enrichment program for girls in third through fifth grade, delivered in partnership with Charleston County School District's Kaleidoscope program.
Step-In is trauma-informed and research-based, built on social emotional learning, cognitive behavioral strategies, and positive psychology. Girls build the emotional tools and relationships that help them navigate challenges and see themselves as capable leaders.
TRAUMA-INFORMED EDUCATOR TRAINING
The most scalable thing we do. Train one teacher and every student in that classroom benefits, twenty to thirty children a day. We equip teachers and school staff to recognize the signs of trauma, respond with care, and build classrooms where students can actually learn.
